Google Is Top U.S. Online Property In August
Once again, the usual suspects filled the top five slots of comScore’s monthly ranking of the top U.S. Web properties.
Google sites -- including video site YouTube -- led the way, drawing 183.4 million unique visitors in August, according to the list released today. Yahoo’s sites were second, with 177.5 million uniques. Microsoft (177.2 million), Facebook (162.4 million) and AOL (109.2 million) rounded out the top five.
Education was the fastest growing category for the month, increasing 19% to 73.7 million visitors. Shipping sites followed, up 17%. Career sites (up 12%) and book sellers (up 11%) also posted increases in August.
“Online activity was largely driven by back-to-school in August as Americans made final preparations on all fronts for the upcoming academic year,” comScore executive vice president Jeff Hackett said. “Weather was also top of mind for many Americans, especially on the east coast with the onset of Hurricane Irene, and pharmacy sites saw pickup in time with allergy and flu shot season.”
Google also led comScore’s ad focus ranking, reaching 93.4% of online Americans with its Google Ad Network. Yahoo Network Plus (87.4%), AOL Advertising (86.9%), AT&T AdWorks (83.9%) and ValueClick Networks (82.8%) filled out the top five.
