Sporting News Drops Print Edition

The 126-year-old sports magazine will drop its print edition on Jan. 1, 2013. Sporting News  said the magazine could not be profitable in current print ad market.

Sporting News today announced that as of Jan. 1, the 126-year-old sports magazine would become a digital-only brand.

In a letter to subscribers today, the magazine acknowledged that the move was unpopular with longtime fans, adding, “Unfortunately, neither our subscriber base nor the current advertising market for print would allow us to operate a profitable print business going forward.”

Sporting News will allow customers who are unhappy with the change to request a full refund of their remaining balance by Jan. 15.

The magazine will continue to print six special editions in 2013.
