Nielsen research indicates that stations can use their Web sites to notably expand reach of their news content, helping drive cross-platform sales. The data, which looked at the ABC affiliates in Seattle and Portland, Oregon, shows that by using one metric, each received at least a 3% bump in the 25-to-54 demo in the May 2011 sweeps period.

Google beat out Facebook as the year's top Web brand, averaging more than 153 million visitors per month, according to Nielsen. Facebook, however, was by far the year's top social network. Google's YouTube far outpaced the rest of the field when it came to video sites.

In the third quarter of 2010, 62% of tablet owners were under the age of 34 and only 10% were over the age of 55. By the second quarter of 2011, only 46% of tablet owners were under the age of 34 and the percentage of those over 55 had risen to 19%, according to Nielsen.

Nielsen's new "State of the Media: Cross Platform Report" found that streaming of Internet video may come at the expense of some traditional TV viewing. The study reported that during the first quarter of 2011, the heaviest streamers group -- those who view 18.8 minutes of streaming video a day -- also watch 272.4 minutes of traditional TV a day. On the other end of the spectrum, Those who streamed 0.1 minutes per day, watched 290 minutes of TV. Link

Nielsen executive vice president of media product leadership Cheryl Idell in a presentation yesterday to executives at the 2011 TV Summit presented numbers that suggest that the cord-cutting phenomenon is not for real. According to Idell, the increase in broadband-only households from 2010 to 2011 has only grown from 3.6% to 4.4% of Americans with televisions.

Nielsen disclosed that a glitch in its system caused it to undercount traffic to Web sites and show a 22% decline in time spent online for at least the past three months. The flaw affected Nielsen's NetView service, but likely also VideoCensus, MegaView Retail, MegaView Search, AdRelevance, WebRF services, as well as custom research.
